When Berkeley Breathed posted the above Sunday strip on Facebook a week ago, he included the following text:
Happy Vintage Monday! On March 11, 1984, I opened the paper to read a wholly re-edited version of the strip I had submitted to the Washington Post syndicate some weeks before. Enclosed is the unfiddled version. —bb
The edited version is here: https://www.gocomics.com/bloomcounty/1984/3/11
More Bloom County Media lies! The Beacon is not the world’s cheapest newspaper. When I was in college in D.C. the News was delivered free, apparently in a desperate attempt to raise their sinking “circulation” numbers!
I don’t know whether Jebsen is a squat twat or not….
So we are winding up the offensensitivity reboot with that time Berkeley was annoyed because he used an offensive word to describe women’s anatomy as an insult about a man and got censored (probably because of the offensive nature of the word and not because of the way it was deployed)? I get the joke, I just think it’s pretty tone deaf to make that the hill where he makes his stand.

Well I can’t see why a minor little misspelling should be any cause for concern.

According to the dictionary, a twat is “A contemptible and stupid person, idiot.”
But, with that being the second definition….

“So, Senator, if we misspelled your name everywhere, how’d you know the story was about you?”

Cheaper than the Shepherd Express?

Pretty sure the original said his name was spelled “Potatohead”, not “Squat Twat”.

? Last panel; Desks are ‘flipped around’, mirror-image position of the previous panels…?

I’m more surprised that Breathed actually thought a paper in 1984 would have printed “squat twat.”

Maybe he had a bet going about how many newspapers would edit it.
