Why doesn’t Dad think of Calvin? How about a trip to Disney World? If Dad wants to camp, he should find camping friends and not drag his family along. I would never have taken a vacation my family hated. That’s selfish.
I wound up camping for a week. First morning woke up and looked as if I had measles. Midgie bites. This was in Scotland. Got no bug strips and put them up around the tent. They were yellow strips with bug killer, the midgies went to them and died. I don’t know if they even make them anymore. Shell gas stations sold them.
To all who wonder why Calvin’s Dad does this to them:He thinks of vacation as “a matter of perspective”. Since their week long vacation is not that great, the rest of their life seems like a vacation.
I love camping. All that time out in nature, and the kids can’t waste time on electronics. Dress for the weather, enjoy the campfire and the stars. Hear the birds sing and watch for wildlife. Splash in streams and climb on rocks. Go for hikes. Play games and spend time as a family. It’s awesome for those of us who enjoy the outdoors.
The right equipment makes a world of difference, though. More primitive camping is fine, but a few comforts work wonders to set everyone at ease. I loved tent camping as a kid, but I have to admit that our tent trailer is very nice. Cots or good camp mats do a great job, too, though. Use bug spray if you are in a buggy area. There is absolutely no need to subsist on canned food – we have even baked a cake over the fire. Calvin’s dad is doing this the hard way.

Calvin actually does have a point. The great outdoors aren’t really THAT great. Ask Garfield.

Bug spray really softens up those rocks too!

What Calvin said. My idea of roughing it is a hotel with no room service.

My idea of a holiday is staying home and not answering phone calls, ordering in, and sleeping late. :D

Wow! After last year’s camping debacle, Dad wants to do it again?! LOL! Does he just want his family to hate him?

MY definition of “Camping”; Staying at Motel 6 instead of the Ramada.

Must be Dads idea of payback for Calvin being Calvin and Mom for not getting the dachshund.

I used to feel a little like this about camping when I was a kid. Now I’m 36 and I feel EXACTLY like this about camping.

You don’t have to sleep on bumpy rocks, Calvin. I once put my sleeping bag in a patch of poison ivy. It was plenty soft.

Calvin is a fun comic strip, love it, but I can’t help but wonder if he acts like a teen now what would he be like as one? Frightening thought.

Hard to imagine how Watterson makes this year’s trip funnier than last year’s. And please, C&H diehards, don’t tell me!

Just feed yourself on wildberries and fruits and cover yourself in mud to avoid mosquitoes. Better than any bug spray.
