It would be interesting to know how Watterson drew this cartoon, whether he used white ink on a black background or outlined everything then colored the background black leaving openings for stars.
This strip was made before the night skies were dotted with satellites. Makes me a little sad to think about the fact that we no longer experience the lonely vast expanse the way that they’re doing here.
Flagstaff is a Dark Sky city. I am still impressed when I can walk onto the deck and see the Milky Way. I remember in Phoenix I could open combination locks at night by the sky glow.
Actually, “all night” is the only time you can look at the stars. Only one is visible in the daytime. And not a good idea to look directly at that one.
That reminds me of the time I got up close and personal with a moose in the woods of southern New Hampshire. I stepped out of the tent very early in the morning to relieve myself and had a moose scare the snots out of me. Fortunately, it wasn’t feeling mean and took off quickly.
I took a city-boy night fishing along a river once, about 35 years ago. We heard some splashes upstream from us, probably an otter or beaver, but this poor fellow got so scared of the noises in the dark we had to call off the fishing so I could take him home.
Third Panel is priceless! Ok, I understand Hobbes being scared silly, he’s a tiger after all, but isn’t that the intrepid, fearless, brave Spaceman Spiff next to him? He doesn’t look very courageous.

See? The “great” outdoors even ruins star gazing.

Looks more like “high-tail it” back to the tent!

Those times where you can’t enjoy nature because you’re afraid of it’s surroundings.

Could have been worse. Might have been the sound of banjos.
