In an eerie way, this makes a lot of sense. Our butcher could even be a former serial killer (because they are able to blend in). I for one, am looking forward to learning who it might be. Aaron has a talent for making unexpected twists like that.
Velda has the Flask quality about her. She is absolutely right. The same one who stabbed Copper. Bet his name is Mack…..the Knife;-). Bet those meat eaters were once Vegans. The transformation does have that effect. Holly hated cheese. So these folks must have been Vegans. They now crave meat. Of course our killer could be a doctor…….driven by the nutritional needs of his patients and access to the chems to make knockout drug…….like found at one missing pig scene.
Taking all bets, everybody! Who IS the man behind Endtown’s Pork Deli? Is it a doctor? A policeman? A cat or a dog? Is it you? IS IT ME? Give it your best guess and find out if you’re right next… Month? Week? Chinese New Year? Whatever! Just guess and have patience, I guess. :)
Anybody raised on a farm would be able to handle it—-subtracting that “do not kill your fellow humans even if they do look like farm animals” thing, of course—-so how many of those in Endtown have the right background?
My guess about Velda is that she likes living “upstairs” with all the modern conveniences and she will do anything she can to stay there. I don’t see her having anything more to do with Jacob than what we are seeing.
Portia however, may be a more bitter surprise in the end than what we have seen so far.
Here’s a thought – what if you’re a secret sadistic murderer who has no difficulty slitting his fellow Endtowner’s throat BUT you’ve mutated into a helpless type farm animal – chicken or a duck or even a rabbit? Would you be gazing at your own reflection hungrily? Sorry, these thoughts pop into my head and I can’t repress them!
Captain James T Kirk: "Of Course!!! It was so obvious; it was right there in front of our noses. The leaders of the Inner Circle!!!. The Butcher. The Baker. The Candlestick Maker!! "
Since nothing is as it appears, I’m picking up a vibe that Velda is about to use Jake to eliminate the head of the cannibal group, which is either in conflict with her group or impeding their plans.
Considering everyone’s already used to having the rats perform as stormtroopers and all, wouldn’t it be easy to just have a home to home search using a metal detector? Butchers have a lot of knives, correct? And with the Apex tech, pretty sure they could just scan the walls and say “Oh, what’s all this ’ere then?” when they spot meat cleavers instead of pipes?
As said above Velda definitely has many of the fine qualities of Flask/Blackie, so let us get off the conspiracy band wagon about her. Would definitely love having her in more strips, a fair fill in for Flask.
Velda’s no saint, but she’s no psychotic either (unlike Flask). She’s one tough lady trying to get by as best she can under unbelievable circumstances. I get the impression that she might not be quite as cynical as Jake, and I think that makes her a bit more grounded than him. Jake’s primary concern is obviously himself, but if what benefits him also benefits Endtown along the way, he’s not opposed to it. Velda is displaying a concern for someone outside of herself (though it may simply be the fact that she’s trying to keep her current meal ticket from falling apart). Only time (and Aaron) will tell. I’ll freely admit that I was pretty unhappy about the direction we seemed to be headed with lynchings, suicides and executions; but this is an interesting turn and I look forward (for now) to seeing how it all plays out. ;-)

Velda does have a point. It’s a shame that there’s no ready list one can refer to for stuff like this. Just think, googling “Endtown butcher.”

I think the story is falling apart here.
The butcher exists because of demand. Killing the butcher doesn’t kill the demand.
And, if there is a “supermarket” factor, as Velda puts it, then there must already be a supply chain, along with competition!
Plus, as Jake has already pointed out, Endtown has a food supply, so what guarantees that the meat eaters will starve?
My final concern: Is this devolving into a story of the virtues of vegetarianism and veganism over the “rest of us”?

I have a feeling that Velda was Jacob’s wife before the mutations happened.

I got a better idea: lock up all 127, including the butcher, in a single room with water but no food.

So it’s just a matter of finding out who the butchers are…

You would need someone that is psychopathic enough to do it. A rare person indeed.

Well, like said herself … she couldn’t wait until she didn’t have to do the dirty work herself.

Starting to wonder just what Velda did in her previous existence, before TEOCAWKI.
