To our friend, LeadingEdge, I know you and the missus have had a busy summer traveling. Just want you to know that many of us still appreciate what you contributed to our little community. All the best
As a kid I actually enjoyed this time of year because it meant school was right around the corner. While I loved summer vacation I was also excited at the prospect of a new school year and all the new things that came with it. New teacher, new classes, new things to learn, new field trips, making new friends, and connecting with old ones. We started the day after Labor Day, and by that time summer was past its peak, and I had gotten the most out of it. Days getting shorter again, nights cooler, parents growing less patient with me. It seems most kids now are starting school earlier and earlier.
A single panel, yet informally divided into three frames by the trees. The speed of summer’s passing rendered visually by the speed of Calvin’s wagon. The use of perspective to show it coming, whizzing past, and finally gone into the distance. Watterson’s art at its best.
The great thing about this one is that Watterson had to put all the important stuff at the bottom, so it could be cut down (he didn’t get the guaranteed full half page at this point), but it looks natural and not crammed un.
Yes, it’s unfortunately right! But in the last days heat was so enormous, no one could bear it any more! Now it cooled down, I think many people are relieved !
I just saw the new movie, Christopher Robin. A constantly repeated theme is the importance of doing nothing because doing nothing will lead to something. (In the movie, the grown up C.R. has become a workaholic.)
If there’s any doubt that C&H was the greatest comic strip ever, I submit this strip. Funny, no. But it’s great nevertheless. Peanuts might have been more groundbreaking but C&H was better.

There’s so much nothing, they even made a show about nothing.

I love how Bill had to completely redraw this comic from scratch for the book collections because of the different format in the books.

Be grateful, Calvin, you’re not in Japan where you even do your homework during summer vacation until the autumn trimester comes into play.

Was this the very last one, when Watterson retired the strip?

That’s an excellent way to put it, Calvin. Expresses exactly how I am feeling this morning.

And notice that the colours on the left are more Spring-like, while those on the right are more Autumnal.

After childhood you have to wait until retirement to have all that, do nothing time.
Prescott_Philosopher about 6 years ago
LOL, my retirement has very little do-nothing time.
