Should I be relieved or concerned that I’m not on the list?

My story is much too sad to be told,

But practically everything leaves me totally cold.

The exception I know is the gist

When I’m out on a quiet spree,

    Fighting vainly the old ennui,

And I suddenly check and refresh that special list.

    .

I get no kick from champagne.

Mere alcohol doesn’t thrill me at all.

So tell me why I catch my breath

When I get a kick out of death?

    .

Some, they may go for cocaine.

I’m sure that if I took even one sniff

It would bore me terrifically, too.

Unless I could also kill you.

The bird, knowing that the snake is certainly about to eat it, cannot look away. There is a moment of perfect stillness where neither moves or looks away, as the bird is unable to move quickly enough to escape, and knows it, while the snake is quick enough to snare the bird in a single swift strike, and knows it.

Neither does life. Don’t defer things, don’t pine for days of yore. This moment is all you have, forever more.

My mother and grandmother used to call the obituary column in the newspaper, the Irish Sports Page, because it was the first thing that the women would read in the paper ( followed by the engagements and nuptials section). The "Irish Sports Page provided fodder for the daily gossip.

Every day I’m not on the Irish Sports Page is a good one !

I’ve seen animals listed on that page. Racehorses, a gorilla that had to be killed after some neglectful parents allowed their toddler to wander into his habitat, that last reproducing mate of a soon-to-be-extinct species, etc.

Wow. Koko the lowland gorilla that learned sign language died. Age 46. I found him listed on that notables page. I’m not sure I would have found out otherwise or this soon. Not that this is earthshaking news, but still…

I did not even know there was such a list. Nor does it much matter. When I check out, I won’t be around to see if I made the list. And, be honest, isn’t that what most of us most care about?
