Yet in Sweden, Denmark, Norway, and Germany, student debt is practically unknown because higher education is paid for by the government — and no, the citizens of those countries don’t mind paying higher taxes to pay for it, because they know it’s a solid investment in their future that will pay off big time!

Tuition’s not really that high at his university, but it’s taken him 35 years to get his B.A. in English.

By the way, Goat should know very well that wisdom is not taught at universities.

Georgia uses the lottery to pay for free state tuition if you have a B or better average and maintain it in college.

I know people in their 50’s paying off college debt. I went to community college and have a good paying job, no debt. Yeah, I know, I can’t brag I graduated from Harvard or Yale, big deal.

Where does all that tuition money go?

My nephew’s bill was over $250,000. And of course, he has no job.

Many of those debts come from going to a fancy-named school and studying something totally useless in the real world. For most people any major ending with the word “studies” is going to be a waste of time.

We’ve lied to our children and told them college is a time to follow their dreams. It’s not; it’s a time to prepare for a career in the REAL world.

I briefly switched my major to history because I love it so much, but then I had a wake up-call when I discovered most schools don’t teach history anymore (a good way to keep the populace snowed) and the schools that do let the PE coaches teach it.

Regarding free tuition in European countries. There’s not a lot of dead wood there and people take education seriously, too bad many people here do not.

When I went to college the tuition was $75 a semester. That was for taking 17 to 19 credit hours.

When you go to college before you know how to think, you just sort of zen yourself into a six-figure starting salary on graduation and just keep signing loan papers. And heaven forbid anyone mention the “W” word to get through college. And where were the parents while the doofus was signing his life away for debt he could never retire? Oh, yeah. Getting that $500,000 mortgage at age 60 so they’d have a nice place to park the two new cars they buy every year. Who needs to save when you can borrow? Just because someone hands you a shovel doesn’t mean you have to dig your own grave.

We didn’t have govt back loans. You went to the bank with your transcripts and a “business” plan. If you had good grades and were planing to degree in a field with good employment prospects, you got the loan.

Of course, we didn’t have courses like TV watching and advanced sexual self-identification assessment.

heaven forbid that kids nowadays should have to work to pay bills. let’s impose more taxes so that the rest of us should have to pay it for them!

The average college graduate pays about $5800 more a year in federal taxes than the average high school graduate. Over 30 years, that totals about $172,000. If that’s divided by the 4 years it takes to get a college education, the government would break even if it paid every student $42,000 a year to attend school. This doesn’t even consider that with the degree, the person is less likely to ever need unemployment or welfare, that more students would complete high school if they could see a clear way to a really good job, and that they would be enriching the Social Security and Medicare funds. They would also be paying a larger amount in all other types of taxes.The best investment we could make to keep America strong is to not just forgive all student loans but to make all higher education, as long as the student is making decent grades, totally free, and increase the number of schools and teachers to make room for all who can profit from the education. We don’t, even at a time of high unemployment, have so much a lack of jobs as we have a lack of people who have the skills to perform the jobs that are available- in other words, a lack of education.

Spending big $ on a university education does not ensure a successful career.Some people don’t understand that until they learn it from the school of experience.

Having an education and/or even a great career also does not guarantee a person will or won’t be a total waste of flesh. Nor does calling yourself a good person or even a good (insert religious affiliation here). I know a lot of poor, atheist or agnostic, and uneducated people who deserve far better lives than a few millionaires I know. Neither one insures your worth or your goodness either way. That’s a hard lesson to learn and can put you into a lot more debt than just money.

Our college students should always go in with a plan of how this is going to help me make money. Far too many students are simply going for “the college experience” and not really thinking of how this will help their future. A college degree means little if it doesn’t help you make a better living.

Beware of dentists and doctors with heavy school debt, cause you’re gonna be the trough upon which they satiate their debt.

Sorry, Robbie, but the Liberal Arts degree in Women’s Studies won’t help you to find a job, just as the English Literature degree won’t help anyone else. Suck it up, buttercup.

There really isn’t any good reason to rack up that kind of debt. Too many kids think they have to go to their private “dream” school and take a course of study with more degrees than jobs.

All that money spent on his education and he doesn’t know you don’t graduate college, you graduate from college.

The poor, in-debt doofus is Neighbor Bob’s son, for goodness sake! That explains a lot! That, and the likelihood that he went to an over-priced “big name” school instead of a competent local one….

It also doesn’t help that A: a lot of teachers and administrators flat-out lie about job opportunities for their majors these days, and B: most students I knew in college three years ago were working at least two entry-level jobs… which weren’t usually even enough for room and board, much less an education. It doesn’t help that the job market is so awful that I’ve worked alongside STEM degree holders as grunt work in department stores… and don’t you dare tell me that they were just too lazy or stupid to make it in the real world.

But that’s GOVERNMENT EDUCATION in Sweden! Government education is EVIL, because it doesn’t teach obedience to the mystic sky daddy or the industry that supports him! Or that people that don’t share your sexual orientation are devils. Or that people of different races are sub-human animals! Or that people of different religions are terrorists! Or that people with different political beliefs are traitors!

My sister is more than $500,000 in student debt!!
