Fortunately women shaming dropped out of favor long before dog shaming became a thing.

The staged sit-in against human trafficking got the attention it wanted by being controversial .

I struggled to find a wisecrack until Irealized the problem: this is fundamentally horrible. This is a genuine masterpiece BECAUSE of the message it conveys. Thanks for calling it to our attention,Steve, but you can do better.

Perhaps a tad tasteless but very thought provoking and enlightening. Now if we could just get people as incensed about human trafficking as they are about the border issues something could be done.

    A Slave for Sale

(best viewed by Google Chrome, which can automatically translate most pages as necessary) has info and links that point to info about this painting, along with a Description (longer at its Notes link).

all have info about this artist (the last in Spanish; again, Chrome can automatically translate), perhaps in addition to what’s pointed to by the first URL. This is the first work by him used here.

Again, a larger strip image is shown by clicking the image in Mr. Melcher’s MASTERPIECE #1994 (July 11, 2018) blog entry, accessible by the Check out the blog! box after the last comment.

No comment needed. I wonder what was going thru the artist’s mind while painting this. Hopefully, he did NOT have a true-to-life model!

I have no problem with this. Yes, slavery was and is horrible. Pretending it didn’t/doesn’t exist isn’t going to change that fact. Finding humor in any situation does not help or hurt the situation. Should Mr. Melcher not use any portraits of women, because they were treated as property in the past (and probably still in the present)? Or pictures with soldiers because war is terrible? These pictures were made in the times they represented, and history is what it is. Pretending it wasn’t or trying to clean it up doesn’t change a single fact.

I went looking for what’s written there and it’s “Rose, 18 years-old, 800 coins”.How far have we come and how far we are from eradicating these types of behaviors. And if we’re not vigilant we risk going back there.
