I was given the nickname “Flash” for reasons best left unsaid… There may have been copious amounts of beer involved…I wonder if Mr. Mallet will have Ms Plainwell walk the dog of dogs, the terrier of terriers, the noble Scottie.
Bernard Hinault – 5 time Tour de France champion was known as the Badger. Hard to root for him since he blocked Gre Lemond (Americas greatest cyclist) from a 4th Tour de France win
Somewhere during my middle-school teaching life, the term Badger described the student who was always at one’s elbow, always underfoot, always chattering endlessly about everything and nothing. Couldn’t avoid them, couldn’t discourage them, couldn’t spray for them. Occasionally interesting, mostly madly irritating. Somehow they always scored well and are the ones I miss most often.
If I remember correctly, Charlie Brown gave himself the nickname “Flash.” It was what he wished everyone would call him, but, of course, no one ever did. Made me sad, as poor CB often did.
In grade school mine was G.G. My friends Jeff, Joe, and I would imagine incredible adventures at recess, some of which found their way into hand-drawn comic books; one of mine was called “Jeff, Joe, and the G.G. (Gerald Goblin),” in which I had been transformed into such. My alter ego later morphed into “Goofy Goblin” in their books.
In high school German class we were expected to select a German name to use in class; I went with Gerhard as closest on the list to Gerald, and classmates started using it outside class to the extent that classmates outside that class picked it up. I now think of myself as a medical, legal, and financial entity named Gerald; a public persona named Jerry; and an inmost soul named Gerhard.
When I was in high school (late 60’s) I sang with my then girlfriend , both as an acoustic duo, and together in a band (I still like our band name: “Fly By Night Travel Agency”.) (I did say it was the 60’s.) Both the duo and the band were good, but I still cringe a little when I remember using the stage name Shane Michael Eden; my girlfriend’s was Randall Lee Masters; together we performed as Randy and Shane (huge surprise, right?)

Be thankful when people give you a nickname you actually like. It doesn’t happen that often!

I had to choose my own nickname. I could live with Moose… I did not want to go through life having people randomly calling me Tank.

George Costanza always wanted to be called T-bone. His attempt to make it his nickname didn’t work out too well.

I was White Knight. Partly because I was going to an inner city school, partly because I was an aggressive athlete.

From the first afternoon of my freshman year in college, through the end four years later, I was know, even to my professors, as “Tree.”

Here in Wisconsin, we don’t think it’s any kind of big deal to be called Badgers. In fact, we kinda like it.

She calls him that because she doesn’t need him and he stinks.

I was nicknamed “Spider” because I was so skinny. Today I struggle with obesity — anyone else see a connection?
