    A long time ago it was so kids could help out on the farm in the summer. Now, not so much unless you live in an area with lots of summer tourists and need the teens to run the amusement park rides.

    Because we were an agrarian society for many years and the kids were needed on the farm. It would be more economical for the vacations to be reversed in non-farming communities.
