Janis should bag the shrimp and cantaloupe leavings and put them in the freezer until garbage day. These hot summer days and nights make for “cooked” garbage.
I live in Florida. Sometimes, even though I know something has “gone bad” in the fridge, I won’t throw it in the trash (in the garage) until the night before trash day. Why? Because the rotting smell is just awful and I also don’t want to attract anything that might make it’s way into the garage. We are not allowed to leave our trash cans outside in a gated community. And you wouldn’t want to. Bears, maybe alligators, birds….raccoons…nope and nope.
You think that’s bad? A couple years back, late August just before Labor Day weekend, my brother’s freezer was unplugged by one of his sons and put back into a switched (OFF) receptacle. The 90* heat over a few days in the garage thawed, and then rotted, several pounds of chicken he has stored there.
We hauled the now-ruined freezer and its horrid contents to the dump late on Saturday – the guys were closing up the drop off and told us to quickly throw the stuff in so they could leave for their long “weekend”… I DID NOT envy them coming back to that heated mess come Tuesday! Gross…
The stuff in the bags isn’t too horrible – if you tie up the bag. The worst is the “garbage water” that sometimes seeps out into the can. That is the worst smelling substance on the face of the earth. It can be quite a challenge to hose off the can to clean it out without getting any on you.
Just boasting here. We keep a recycle bag and a small plastic container in the freezer all the time. The bag for meat waste like bones, etc. the container for liquid fats and grease. They don’t get put out until garbage day. The kitchen recycle bin only gets vegetable and fruit garbage.
Our townhouse has a shared hallway to the garages. The senior lady across the hall had a cat. Then she passed on and a young couple moved in and had a baby. Two years later, when that child was nearly potty trained, they had another. I don’t know what a summer without garbage stank is like any more …
We freeze our bones until we have enough to make bone broth. We save most of our vegetable scraps (also in the freezer) to feed to my sister’s chickens. Food that went bad in the fridge is the only thing food-related we have to throw out – at least until we get a hot composting pile (which is hard to do in an apartment) – and we make sure we take it out to the trash as soon as possible.

I hope Janis now has a better appreciation for their trash collector.

What happened to the compost pile they started a few summers ago? Food waste should not be going in the garbage can!

I seem to remember a similar strip a while back about smelly garbage and “the smell of summer”

Nothing says summer that a line up of black heat sucking driveway dumpsters the day before pickup

ALWAYS hold your breath when opening a garbage can in the summertime!! That’s just common sense!

I remember my father boiling shrimp in the winter and me staying outside in the freezing night wind because that was preferable.
