1.) As kids we used to say to put a dime in those shoes. That way if you ever had to make an emergency call you had a dime for the phone booth. (I know this bunch knows what a phone booth is too!)
2.) Did any of you live in an area that had the JACK’s COOKIES that were in the big plastic container with a lid on it. They were one cent each. And in a move that would get a store owner arrested today for health code violations….. you just opened the lid, reached in and got your cookie(s), put the lid back on and then paid for them! They were ‘loose’ and unwrapped too. That was in the early 1960’s.

I hope outfits two and three get a lot more use than outfit one.

Nowadays you’d have to jam quarters into the slots.

Pretty conservative! Could wear that to high school as well. Gads, thinking about Red in high school makes me sad. He is too adorable at this age.

I was (still am) rather wiggly and didn’t like anything on my feet, so Mom always figured loafers would be comfortable for me. Nope. Hush Puppies.

As I remember, white socks were preferred with penny loafers – made the penny loafers stand out better.

This one made me think of two things.
Just comic strip is turning into a fashion show for Red. A hilarious fashion show at that.

Notice the pennies in the second panel. I wonder if this period-related reference went past some of the younger readers?

Penny loafers are coin operated shoes.
