My sister and I work from home in similar jobs to Adam’s. I prefer my desktop, which I, like some others above, assembled myself. However, my sister switched to a laptop last year, despite a better spec desktop I built for her, the traitor!!
I have a desktop and always have. Have a family member who’s an IT dept geek, I get all my computer needs taken care of for me, so why switch to a laptop? Besides, I can have internet in wire, not wireless, so it’s not easy to break into my computer and I can shut it all down, turn off the surge-protector switch and save electricity and my computer and my personal information. Computers are energy vampires and today’s hackers are capable of the most insidious attacks, so my computer is only on and only on electricity, when I need it.
It’s actually very easy to use a laptop AS a desk PC. I use a regular keyboard and mouse, connected through a USB hub so that when I want to take the laptop with me, I just unplug the hub and off I go.
The biggest problem with using a laptop full time is the battery. It’s hard on the battery to keep it on the charger all the time. It’s also hard on the battery to constantly be discharging and recharging all the time. I follow the experts’ advice — I take the battery out when using as a desktop. (I have a UPS for my setup.)
Using a desk top for regular work is preferable when one considers one’s posture…I’ve seen how people scrunch their backs and necks to see the screen properly, or how their hands and arms wobble all over while their back is all curved toward the keyboard, when they try to type. In a few years everyone will be walking around with that old person turkey neck, that I see in the nursing home when I visit…

Nick!! They let you out of the basement twice in the same month!! And it wasn’t even for Christmas or Thanksgiving! Praise the Looord!!
And they even gave you a line! (Oh, wait, that’s your mom speaking…) Anyway, I guess those calls to the Comic Strip CPS finally paid off. ;-)

A gazebo with roller blinds and wifi range extender and outlet for charging cables works fine.
