Of no significance to anyone but me and my softball team, I once made a similar error at first base, and immediately heard “get your butt down!” I did not get low enough to reach the ground. I was somewhat vindicated a little later by snagging a nasty line drive. I jumped really high and made a “snow cone catch.”
