War heroes need all the thanks they can get, Mike, they’re the ones who have to live with mental and physical injuries for the rest of their lives. Try fighting alongside B.D., just once, and you’ll be BEGGING to work 14 hours a day at a desk job!
I don’t think any vet, myself included, ever thought of themselves as a hero – quite the reverse, actually. We did our time, did our job, paid our dues and that was that.
My generation, coming back from Vietnam certainly didn’t get any warm Welcome Home or ticker tape parades. Quite the reverse !
Maybe that’s why, guys my age are more appreciative of what the young men and woman in uniform are going through, today. And why many of us are opposed to having our children and grandchildren fight needless conflicts, simply to satisfy the political agenda and corporate greed, of those who’ve never seen the real horrors of combat.
When you refuse to work on an account that you feel offends your sensibilities, you are not “thrown to the street”, you basically fired for refusal to work.
Let’s keep in mind that it may make you feel good to denigrate the soldiers, but if you don’t want this kind of war, go after the politicians who start it. You say the military was DEAD WRONG. The military did as it was ordered. Anything else, an en masse" disobedience of orders, amounts to a military coup. Also try to remember that the soldiers in Viet Nam knew damn well the war effort was failing. And the journalists tried to tell the public that. It was the politicians who censored those stories and lied about what was going on (well, so did the generals, I concede that)

Let’s start respecting teachers the way we glorify veterans.
