The conditioning of the athletes is a huge difference now. For example, in the not-so-distant-past, there were many starters in the NFL that had to work 2nd jobs in the off-season to be able to support their families. That and increase in # of regular season games changes makes it hard to compare stats.
It the caller wants a low-scoring affair he should switch to soccer, which is a dull, boring sport where no one scores most of the time and mostly ends in 1-0 snoozefests.
Don’t forget that we also have baseball bats and such designed with thousands of millions of dollars of engineering research plus rules designed to cripple defenses.
I don’t mind a 43-40 score (except when my team is on the WRONG dang side of the score!), but something like 30-27 can be more interesting. And I’d rather see, not just a better balance between offense and defense, a better balance between rushing and passing. I have more all-time favorite running backs than quarterbacks.
Hockey is the only watchable professional sport anymore for the reasons Tank’s caller mentioned. Analytics finally killed baseball for me two months ago, and I’ve been a Dodger fan for 58 seasons.
No sport is played in a venue large enough for current players, except for Canadian Football. But no over is going to agree to increase field size by giving up the priciest seats, so… it is what it is, and will continue to do so.

I’m sure the sport-stat Geex will find a way to make a pre/post configuration ratio!

If high scores is the desire, one should watch cricket!

And yet I bet the caller is one of those who calls soccer “boring” …

And that’s why I am a fan of the CFL. Last night’s SNF was normal for the CFL.

Yes, they are offensive, and that’s why I don’t watch, anymore. I miss football, but nobody plays that anymore.
