The middle school geography taught here required kids to color in maps as a memorization tool – ‘Color Italy red. Color France green. Color Germany yellow, and so on. When my son’s class had a geography test, they were given a map with the countries colored differently. My son got all the questions on his test right, but he said almost two-thirds of the class failed because they had memorized countries by color, not by shape and location.
