We have 2 trees in our yard – neither of which drop leaves – when hurricanes come or wind just blows we get everyone else’s leaves in our yard and pool. Irma left us with 15 bags worth that we took out of the pool last year.
I have never bothered with raking… the decomposing leaves are mulch for the yard! Although now we live in high desert, so not as many trees, unfortunately.
Well when you can’t see the grass for the leaves, they really don’t do much as mulch, as much as they kill the grass. So I just set the mower up a couple of notches and attach the bagger. I at least two to three bags off both the front and back yards. In fact I just had to do the front yard. Since I have a Natural Area with water (read that a slough) in the back yard those trees haven’t turned just yet.
I prefer to leave the leaves, but husband insists on clearing them up. We always see to have more leaves than the neighbors and the leaves look like the ones on their trees. We only have one tree.
The system we have come up with is that I sit with a garbage can with set up to vacuum leaves into the can. He rakes the leaves into piles and pushes them to me and I vacuum them. Then I close and pull out the bag and shelp it to the side of the street – repeat until most are gone or the sun is gone. Backyard is left.
Last year we found out why we seem to have more leaves than our neighbors. First, one day we came out for lunch and the gardening service for the neighbor to the south blowing leaves onto our property – he ran away when we came out. Then when we were picking the huge amount of leaves on our driveway – we have small properties with everything close together – our driveway is on the property line to the north – husband stepped in something that was not leaves! Yes, the gardening service for the neighbor to the north of us blew all the leaves onto our driveway – and their dog’s poop came along. (They don’t walk the dog, they let him go in the yard and he seems to like the area next to the property line.)
So, basically, the old people in their sixties (us) are dealing with the leaves from all 3 properties – and our neighbors are in their 30s!!
