Why do you have to remember things such as that?

The truth shall set you free, Maria—just after you get raked over the coals.

It became a state on August 21, 1959, not long after Alaska. (Alaska became a state on January 3, 1959. I can just barely remember when the U.S. flag had 49 stars on it.) It took a while for Hawaii to become a state because plantation owners didn’t want statehood. It wasn’t until 1954 when descendants of workers broke the power of the plantation owners that Hawaii was able to move toward statehood.

It isn’t what she said, it was how she said it. To put it another way, so she at least won’t get sent to the Principal’s office, “Knowledge of that fact eludes me at the moment. I’m sure that given enough time, that will be a matter of concern.”

Hawaii is the only U.S. state located in Oceania, the only U.S. state located outside North America, and the only one composed entirely of islands. And also the only one that was a kingdom before it was a republic, a republic before it was a territory and a territory before it was a state. Queen Liliʻuokalani was the last monarch of Hawaiʻi.
