And with the creation of a medical society and licensing, most of them have now been forced into even lower acts, taking up the practice of politics, to foist upon whole segments of the public, remedies of no value. Oddly, they are much loved, richly praised, and generously rewarded for their quackery. In having fallen to a lower station, they have risen to a higher acclaim.
They give The Spanker too much respect by giving his such a colorful name. Why not The Quack? The Charlatan? Also, he’s not really spanking, but assaulting and abusing his victims.
Humbuggery indeed. Any curative effects arising from this treatment would have been coincidental, and focused on quite a different so-called malady. cf TC Boyle’s The Road to Wellville, or anything by Freud.
You had to be an actual “respectable” doctor to get away with… I’m sorry, “treat” female hysteria in those days, so “the Spanker” came up with a work-round.
I used to think that acupuncture was quackery, but apparently it is not. Other wrongly presumed quackery: If the doctors washed their hands before assisting in childbirth, it would reduce the number of women dying in childbirth. The doctors were insulted and rejected the idea. Invisible creatures attacking women was just science fiction. Now we know much better. Lots of new stuff is being tried, most failing, but some working, many doctors refusing to change their ways. And…some people like to be spanked. Maybe it helps. Probably not.
I am appalled to read such a pornographic tale in the Froglandia news stream. But we must face the bitter reality that such as Youran did and probably do exist, even in our Peaceable Kingdom.
We could blame it all on the Gullible, and outlaw gullibility, but I suppose then we would be harassed for “victim-blaming” and maybe even be spanked for our efforts. It’s a bit of a puzzle. And, betimes, the spankings continue….
