My feelings exactly. We have had 6 kids come by in the last 3 years. guess they all grew and go to parties now. At least we still buy candy. Makes letdown edible.
My area is odd. One year there will be a lot of kids and the next year I can count them on one hand. This year they are predicting rain so I probably will have lots of candy for myself.
Been several years since any trick or treaters have come to our house, and even before then we would only have one or two. Living in the country, ten miles from town has it advantages. We still buy some candy and leave the light on just in case anyone decides to drop by.
We live in town, right across the street from a school – but it’s a busy street. We’ve been here 12 years, and I don’t think we’ve had 30 total in that time. To make it worse, this year She finally accepted that fact, and bought one little bag of “peanut butter kisses” (you know, the things in the orange and black waxed paper), rather than the usual massive, optimistic pile (which I always assured was stuff I like……)
Grew up in a house on a state arterial, thru the 60’s-early 70’s would have a steady stream until near-midnite., moved back in the house in the late 80’s after Mom passed, first Halloween sis & i bought a ton of swag thinking it be like the old days..no one came.
We lived in a house where it was hit and miss. We’d get trick or treaters maybe once in 3 years then all of a sudden we’d get them every year for a while, then a year or two would pass with no one coming to the door. My parents used to just buy candy every year for “just in case”. After we all left the house, Mom kept the tradition going for a while then eventually stopped altogether. Now they leave the porch light off and don’t participate as they’re getting older and would rather not have to guess if someone is coming. Also, left over bags of candy aren’t as appealing to them these days. lol
One time years ago I hooked my CB radio & speaker up to a battery and had the speaker out in some bushes by my front porch. Had a lot of fun making funny noises when kids came to the front porch door.
Long ago before we started to go away for my birthday we did not have children with the exception of the little girl who lived next door with her parents at grandma’s house for a few years and then there were 3 kids in the house beyond for a few years. We live on a 4 lane main street,so the 3 girls across the street who we were on waving friendship with their parents never came as they would be killed crossing the street. People from the streets behind us do not know us (or know we exist) so their children would not have been allowed to stop here.
Then for probably around 20-25 years we have been going away – except for the year of Superstorm Sandy – but no one was out trick or treating that year – too dangerous to walk around.
So this year when husband was not well enough to go away we had no idea what to expect. I had figured the (new) little girls – one on each side would come by. Not only did we not have one trick or treater come by, when driving home after a late lunch we did not see even one child out trick or treater nor did we see any children or adults in costume on the streets when we went out and bought take out for dinner.
Later in the evening I read the regional newspaper and the main article in the non-news section was the dearth of trick or treaters in most areas. Apparently for safety reasons they have parties at schools instead and/or there is trunk or treat. In case anyone does not know about the latter – families who are participating get together in a parking lot – school, mall, etc. They decorate the cars and open the trunks and kids go car to car trick or treating. No walking on streets to strange houses and parents know everyone giving the kids candy. We actually saw this – without decorted cars – after Sandy. We went past the Home Depot lot (store closed of course due to storm) and there was a group doing this in the lot. We had figured it was something that some parents had come up with to keep the kids happy and not have them

He should come to my house, we get hundreds of kids. At times they’re lined up 10 and 12 deep!

We get about 30, if it isn’t raining hard, which it looks likely tonight. Wife had a 50% off coupon, so we have candy for 200.

Day year the kids are less than before. Last year we had fewer than 40.

Arlo should go spend Halloween with Marty over at Big Nate. He’d at least get some healthy “treats” to nibble on.

That’s how our neighborhood is, too! No kids around.

I can sympathize. Giant candy bars, and not a single trick-or-treater.

We had more than usual this year because it was fairly warm and not raining for a change.
