Uh, I have had dogs for 63 years and never once did one destroy a couch! Not that it does not happen, but less likely than with cats, IMHO.

I don’t know about cats, but an electric shock collar and half a day of vigilance will solve that problem with a dog.

My cat got on top of a high cabinet the other day and put multiple tooth and fang puncture wounds in a bag of marshmallows.. it was like a vampire had attacked them…

Oh the joys of owning a cat. Or the cat owning your furniture.

We were at the Humane Society yesterday. One dog had a “No stuffed toys” sign. Had to pass, Honey loves her stuffies.

I’d read a comic with that dog in it.

Our cat destroyed a $1200 couch. Nothing worked to stop her until we finally de-clawed her.

Declawing is illegal in some places now, most vets refuse to do it. It is equivalent not to pulling out the nails, as I had always believed, but to cutting off the last joint of the finger. My cat is not declawed, but that was because I got him to save my hollihocks from the bunnies, and he does a darn good job of that. I’m not fond of him proving it by bringing baby bunny bodies in and depositing them at my feet, but he is effective.

Cats gotta scratch, I mean, they HAVE to, so give them things to scratch on. As Gameguy49 said “place your cat/kitten on a cardboard “scratchy box” imitate it scratching by moving its paws, give it a “cat treat” – repeat several times and soon you will be rewarding the cat for doing it by itself. Then reduce to one time a day, at the same time of day (like bed time or first thing in the morning).”

To that I add you should really provide a vertical surface for your cat to scratch as well. IF that doesn’t work then you can use things that the cat won’t associate with you, such as double sided sticky tape. You won’t have to use it forever. Don’t use a spray bottle, it may work in the short term, while you’re there, but the cat will figure out it’s you and that will erode the trust that is necessary for a good relationship with your cat!

I have sisal welcome mats throughout my house. The cats love them and leave the furniture alone. People think I’m weird for having a couple dozen welcome mats. Oh well, the opinion of the cats’ matter, not the opinion of the humans.

In regard to the last panel I’ve never had a dog do that to a piece of furniture. Shed all over it YES, chew/claw or break it, NO.

We’ve had 4 dogs, none have ever done anything close to what’s depicted in the last panel. Though I know some dogs are capable of that.
