Calvin is a special project. Because of the labor intensity, the fruits of the labor are that much sweeter. Plus the fact that he’s a cartoon character. . . . thank you God.
Similar to my mom’s response to our requests for air conditioning in the sixties. “Go out and work in the garden for a while. Then a cold drink and the shade will be cooler.”
This idea has been around since the 17th century. St John of the Cross wrote of standing by an open window (shutters thrown back) for awhile so that when he went back to his cot it would be “warmer.”
Thing is, while this was played for laughs 30 years back, the kid nowadays WOULD call the newspapers (who are now online behind pay walls), and the police for this… and Dad would be in big trouble… :-|
I grew up in a house built in 1740. It had one of those huge fireplaces. To stay warm you sat close to the fire and often kept a blanket handy. Never thought of wearing shorts and a T-shirt after September !
This was my dad! I now keep my heat set at 62 during the night and 66 during the day. In the summer it is 70 at night and 74 during the day. I freeze out my poor husband so see Calvin, someday you will freeze out your poor wife (probably Susie!).
I hope Calvin’s dad get that same treatment when he is old, gray, full of arthritis, bound to a wheelchair, going into a nursing home and he says “it’s cold, someone turn up the thermostat” the caretaker said “go outside and in the few minutes it would seem nice and warm” I bet he will get regrets later

If you saw your neighbor do this in real life, that’s a call to Children Services or even 911.

Dad is on to something here. It actually works. (Not advocating doing this to your kids or pets, though.)

One winter when my daughter was around the age of 10 she came to me in our house wearing shorts and a T shirt telling me we need the heat turned up.

Come on now, that’s not nice. Besides, the boy needs a fire lit under him.

If Dad had gone with him, it would have been a perfect lesson, but not such a funny cartoon.

That will only work until Mom gets home – then she will have the house turned up to a nice toasty 75 F.
