My youngest brother is 14 years younger than I am. His favorite book was “How the Grinch Stole Christmas.” To this day, and I’m in my early 60’s, I can still recite it. That’s how many times I read it.
I love to read “The Hobbit” – having children and now grandchildren gave me the opportunity. The movie got the voices all wrong; they should have listened to me.
I used to try to get my older sister to read me a book called The Whales Go By (by Fred Phelger) because it contained the line, “I am big, I am a whale”. She hated saying that!
Yea, the voices can definitely backfire on you. When my daughter was potty training she always wanted me to read her favorite book “Disney’s The Three Little Pigs” from the Little Golden Book series. Of course I did all the voices and the huffing and puffing which caused giggles but helped her relax. Being as I’m not always as bright as I like to think, it took me a while to realize she had trained to the point of being able to hold it until the last page thus forcing me to finish the story. That’ right, my daughter’s got game and out foxed her dad. Sadly our cat pulled one over on me once as well which gave me a whole new respect for animal intelligence. But, in my defense, when not in uniform and in the field, I’m very trusting of family.
One time my aunt babysat me and made up a bedtime story. Next time she came I wanted to hear the same story — and corrected her every time she got something wrong!

You have give it your all, Dad. By setting a good example, it will help build Calvin’s character.

For a first-grader, Calvin must’ve liked that book since either Kindergarten, preschool, or even day care.

You read a story, you have to do the voices. And you have to bring in favourite toy animals as extra characters. That’s the law.

Dad would really prefer to read “War and Peace” to him instead.

I want to hear Hamster Huey and the Gooey Kablooie. Nearly as much as I want the details of the “Noodle Incident”.

Think of it this way, Dad – when the story’s over, you’ll be so tired you’ll get to sleep right away…

I’m kind of surprised we’ve never seen Hamster Huey and the Gooey Kablooie on the bookshelves.

Did they ever find Hamster Huey’s head, I wonder…

Or try reading Shel Silverstein aloud as fast as you possibly can and take big gulps of air. The more theatrical the voices the better.

There’s a purported version of the book listed on Amazon:
https://www.amazon.com/Hamster-Huey-Gooey-Kablooie-Adventure/dp/0974909009
The comments are . . . a bit harsh. Appears to be that someone ripped the title, which can’t be copyrighted, and made up some minimal content.

Kids want to hear the character’s voices when you read to them. I got real good at sounding like all the Sesame Street characters!
