It would and it invariably does. If all you want is a record that “I/we was/were there”, a selfie’s fine. If you actually want a good photo as well, there’s still a place for a tripod and timer. Or a friendly passer-by, at least.
Yup, that’s how we took selfies in the old good old days and sxorr is correct about why you can’t just hold that kind of camera out in front of you. You also can’t take a picture that close without a special lens.
I did stuff like that with a cheap point-and-shoot camera. It was almost never framed right and my arms weren’t long enough for it to focus. So I just got blurry images of two faces with no background for context.
The lens on a phone’s front-facing camera is a wider angle and focuses closer, since it is (or was originally) designed for video conferencing and related activities.
