Shouldn’t that second panel read “Got any credit, Ed?”… just in keeping with the oddity in the “Back to B.C.” strip (1961) that also ran today, using these very same characters, in the very same situation. The more things change…
Back in the mid-60s I worked one Christmas at Korvette’s. (Are we going back a long time?) My husband (The Late & Unlamented) wanted a certain camera, which the store had on sale. Even with an employee discount, I needed two paychecks to buy it for him, so I decided to open a charge card. Got turned down because I had bad credit going back to 1934! I just gaped at the man. “Do I look as if I was even born in 1934?” He just shrugged. “That’s what it says, lady.” (I was 23 at the time.)
Turned out it was one of L&U’s great aunts or something, who had the same name as mine.
My grandson recently applied for his first credit card. He was denied because he did not have a credit history. How is he supposed to get that history without a credit card. Perhaps those credit companies could give him one with a $500 limit, which he could use to prove himself.
A bank is a place that will lend you money if you can prove that you don’t need it. — Bob Hope
While this probably wouldn’t work today… I built credit with a couple, small, co-signed loans, paid off in a timely manner and by getting a few gas and department store credit cards and using them carefully. Today I have only one credit card that gets paid off each month. I refuse to have a debit card, that’s a direct link to my money that I’m not the least bit comfortable with. Should the credit card be compromised I’m mostly covered… if a debit card is compromised you’re left with an empty bank account… no thanks.

Well you WON’T have any credit after you get that “card.”

money is a illusion and so is having a credit history.

Imagine if other stuff worked like that. “Can I have some food?” “Not if your hungry.” “Can you hire me?” “Only if you have a job.”

Nearly everybody can learn. (I worked with a few who forgot everything every day, but they were rare.)
Some WON’T learn, though.
