Despite the answering machine I had on the phone, my mother always answered the phone. That resulted in every message being garbled in transit and no recording to check for facts. Darn, I miss her.

If it’s important, they’ll call back.

I’m guessing it was 210-361-3668. They left us a message saying it was very urgent. Something about legal action on a social security number. I’ll get around to it right after I take down the Christmas decorations in March.

I am one of those strange people who can carry on a phone conversation while being sound asleep – and not remember any of it when I wake up.

Years ago, when I was working nights and my then-wife worked days, I often, reflexively, would answer the phone next to the bed, when I was sleeping. I have walked my employees through work problems, and spoken to my wife’s friends and clients (she was a CPA) and not recalled anything later on. Obviously, my wife missed many important messages that I never remembered taking.

Yes, we had an answering machine, but in my slumber, I would still pick up. My wife used to tell people that I was a “Sleep Talker”.

I’m on Social Security, and even I have ditched the land line. Before too long, no one will have any idea what Earl’s talking about.

“Earl Pickles passed away in his sleep yesterday. His widow, Opal, made the following statement: ‘I can explain those bruises. I just need some alone time to think’…”

Our little ditty of “with a pencil and pad we figured it out” would work here for Earl LOL
