There had been sixty-seven men attempting to fly across the Atlantic Ocean non-stop?

I have a 1957 hard cover from Ripley’s. It doesn’t sat “Ripley’s Believe It or Not” on the cover, it says “Wonder Book of Strange Facts”.

Does that mean people will kneel when they read Ripley’s?

Way back when, Ripley was trolling the public with a purposely-edited headline?? ;-)

And, weirdly, all 66 of those men had their luggage accidentally rerouted to Passaic.

There previously had been others fly over the Atlantic and return to the mainland after nonstop flight.

What’s a ‘bion’? Doesn’t show up in my dictionary.

Ripley’s is always interesting.

I don’t believe it.

I sympathize with how hard it is to do “BION” now. When it started, there was no internet, and no way for encyclopedias to have all this info. I don’t envy the Ripley people now who have to compete with Google, YouTube, Wikipedia, and the rest of the internet.

The fact that the comic continues testifies to its resiliency.

But I love this history entry today. I want more!

The goal, in order to collect the Orteig Prize ($25K) was to fly non-stop between New York and Paris (3,600 miles). It did not matter if there were more than one person or what type of airplane was used. There was a previous flight that had been flown from Newfoundland to Ireland that was about half the distance. There were 9 attempts to make the NY-Paris flight and 6 persons lost their lives in those attempts including Charles Nungesser and François Coli.
