Why require from others what one fails to do oneself?
Anyway… I agree with Agnes about socks and freedom.
I was 10 when it still meant dressing like a child… not a Victoria’s secret model, or an Instagram celebrity.
11 was still pretty much childhood…. but 12, when I got there, was a murky age….
sometime that year, most of the girls started crossing that line…. their first lipstick, their first below the knee skirts… (yes, I’m that old…. )
and their first nylon stockings.
But my parents held the fort…. and sent me off in to school wearing white, cuffed, cotton anklets… grade school socks, little girl socks.
Taking them off and stuffing them in my purse … OK, it wasn’t actually wearing nylons…
but it was a sweet sweet taste of rebellion and and freedom.
(Couldn’t forget to put the chains… I mean the socks…. back on, though, before the bus ride home.)
Eldest daughter graduated in 1980. She had a classmate whose mother dressed her in socks, patent leather Mary Janes, and crinolines! That poor girl took more teasing than any one person ought to have endured.
Why would she Trout? She’s too busy taking hers on and off for all those “uncles.”
I don’t wear underwear, unless it is really cold, so I am a maverick…
