As a child, summer vacation included guided horseback riding at the YMCA of the Rockies in Estes Park Colorado. Long rides included traversing a very narrow horse trail which crossed a very steep face of a mountain. The sheer drop on the left and the solid rock face on the right meant that there was no escape from the consequences of the horse in front of you suddenly raising its tail and firing its “road apple cannon”.
Anyone who has ever cared for horses knows they do, indeed, have clocks, very precisely tuned to feeding times and goodness help you if you are late. They also have precision stopwatches for work.
I have always hated the “Spring forward/Fall back” thing. The happiest times (sic) were when I lived in places that were not bound to this archaic, useless custom. All the years I lived in Arizona, it was a major plus that we didn’t go on DST. Likewise, here in Ecuador, we don’t waste out time trying to save an hour of daylight.
O.K. Truth be told, this close to the Equator, there’s only a few minutes difference between sunrise/sunset in winter or summer.
Ben Franklin originally merely suggested Parisians change their sleep schedules to save money on candles and lamp oil. The actual time changing happened more recently. For farmers. We are still slaved to it by habit even though very few do it today. Mostly agribusiness. It can actually hurt some people and throws our nocturnal cycle off for months. Better to end it. And while we are doing so just divide the country into only 2 time zones.
DLST was suggested by Ben Franklin as noted by N-G49, but was initiated in the USA during WWII to save coal and other fuels for electricity and was quickly dropped at the conclusion of the war. Then reinstated during to 70’s during the oil crisis, again to save energy generation and consumption.
Regarding that agribusiness want or need DLST as suggested by N-G49, farmers don’t give a hoot one way or another. They’re going to be out of bed, feeding livestock, plowing and harvesting fields by daylight regardless of what time a clock says. DLST was devised and implemented for the sole purpose saving energy. And given modern appliances and technology DLST, by some studies, actually uses more energy not to mention the toll on our nocturnal cycle and overall health.
“#2: You will never find anybody who can give you a clear and compelling reason why we observe Daylight Saving Time.” —Dave Barry, syndicated humor columnist, “25 Things I Have Learned in 50 Years” (1997)
And here we are, 22 years later, still without a good reason for our semiannual madness other than “but we’ve always done it this way.”
I’d really like the USA to adopt the metric system (like the other 95% of the world) and legalize marijuana, but if we can’t even overcome this monumental piece of stupidity (an action that would actually save money as well as time and trouble), we may have abandoned even the pretense of rationality.

By my calculation, correct me if I’m wrong, but I think she’s been getting up an hour early and going to bed an hour early for the last 2 months

Horses are the only animals capable of pooping while walking.

Hate to be a horse-walker with a pooper-scooper!

As a human being, I don’t find pooping while I’m walking even remotely attractive.
