nighthawk - it’s a ‘hybrid’ of Asparagus and Broccoli … it’s not that bad. The stem is like asparagus and the top is like broccoli.

IIRC, it was once upon a time that a Family Circle/Circus panel had Billy singing, “This is the morning for a plate of asparagus.”
Maybe the use in this strip is a nod to Bil.

Allan V, it is not related to asparagus – it is not possible to hybridize a cabbage with a fern.

Mixing up lists is an old habit of mine. When I try to name the Seven Dwarves I always come up with Sneezy, Dopy, Sleepy, Gluttony, Pride, Lust, Anger, War, Famine, Pestilence, and Doc, I think.
