If I had a dollar for every time I heard “So and so and so and so sitting in a tree….” I’d be very rich, we said it all the time. Only the line about who’s in a baby carriage was usually the boy’s name.
Calvin and Susie sitting in a tree. K-I-S-S-I-N-G. First comes love, then comes marriage, then comes an abrupt and tragic miscarriage. Then comes blame, then comes despair, two hearts broken beyond repair. Calvin leaves Susie and takes the tree. D-I-V-O-R-C-E.
This brings up the highly metaphysical question of how Susie “experiences” Hobbes," as just a stuffed animal, or the way Calvin experiences him (at least when Calvin isn’t around)?
I always thought it was charming that we have this annual, industry-fabricated day set aside for schoolboys to get their nuts kicked to smithereens … in a purely figurative sense, of course.
This is one of the cartoons that argues in favor that Hobbes is real beyond Calvin’s imagination because he was able to help Calvin reach into a mailbox he otherwise couldn’t.
Valentine was a pretty common name among early Christians, and there are at least three Saints Valentine. The feast day of February 14 (the date of his/their Martyrdom, circa 269 a.d.) coincides with the pagan Lupercalia (as Christmas conveniently coincided with the Roman Saturnalia) which was the date legend has it that birds chose their mates, and pagan boys would woo pagan girls with gifts. Which just goes to show that everything old is new again.
Not just one of the great C&H strips, one one greatest comic strips in history. Nearly a laugh in every panel. Hobbes song, the myriad looks on Cal’s face, the indignation on Susie’s face, Hobbes and “smooch city”, not just the punch line at the end. Not the only strip that does this and Watterson was the only one who could do this.

When Hobbes says Smooch City, does he mean his own tigress harem?

And then Hobbes gets picked up for child molestation.

From the width of Hobbes’ smile I’m guessing that Susie’s smooches are legendary.

Score one for Hobbes. After all he is cuter than Calvin and less trouble, if you overlook his greetings when Calvin arrives home after school.

I can hear Hobbes now; “If you knew Susie like I know Susie, Oh, Oh, Oh what a gal”…….
