A man I knew was taken to a casino with his family. He was wheelchair bound and left alone for a bit so the family could get coins for the machines. As he sat there empty cup in hand and a pained expression on his face, people walking by him were putting coins in his cup.
One of my brothers never learned to drive so when he’d come in from the East Coast to visit our parents, he would take the Greyhound down from Seattle. One time he was waiting at the terminal and a bum came up to him and asked if he could spare some change. My brother fidgeted around in his pockets but couldn’t come up with any coins. The bum looked at my brother, reached into his pocket, and pullled out a quarter that he flipped to my brother. He said, “you look like you need it more than I do,” and walked off. Weirdly, at the time, my brother was a well-paid programmer working on “Star Wars” project, and based in the Pentagon with the highest of security clearances.

I did that at a counter one day thinking it was the tip cup. I did apologize profusely and bought the woman another cup of coffee
