And in the deep South, it was dreadful if we had a cold winter, because our school didn’t have any more heat in the winter than it had air conditioning when the weather turned hot. So Skyler would be dressed appropriately in our school in the winter, knit hat and all.

Of course after a considerable earthquake, my room developed a draft in the back corner where the bricks collapsed, and we were forced to move to another for several weeks.

Yeah, Fish Stix, those were the new desks that we got when I was in 7th grade in 1953 and were a big improvement. The old desks were cast iron with flat wood seats. The seat for the kid in front of you was part of your desk. If he (or she) fidgeted, your desk wobbled – especially not good for penmanship class. If you wiggled too much, the kid behind you might thump you on the head with his pencil.
Cold in class, you bet! Even in Miami there were times that everyone wore coats and sweaters in class. (Yes, it can get nippy in Miami) We finally got heat in the summer of 1952, but air conditioning? That’s what windows are for! A few of the new schools built in Miami in the late 1950s had air conditioning, but I didn’t have an air conditioned classroom until I went to university.
