Love the captions. “Police Headquarters.” No, really? Where else would you find Testicle Chin these days? and–“Elsewhere”? Only “Not Police Headquarters” could have been less informative. Meanwhile in an effort to save Locher the effort of drawing another character, Testicle Chin tries to phone himself. At least Horn Hair has realized that the pronoun is getting serious. Before it was merely amusing.
What will be Locher’s grand surprise when he unmasks Mordred? Will Mordred be–wow, a woman? Or–gosh, a robot?
Today’s strip is full of excitement! We have the ad in Crimestopper’s Textbook (as Flight Suit) noted, Sam’s at some sort of telephone/communications testing console. Sam makes the statement, “…Tracy can take care of himself”. And we see Mordred’s animated mask complete with facial expressions!
That’s no mask. A mask couldn’t have expressions like that. Mordred is actually a scarecrow, like in the Wiz of Oz. But a homicidal one. You’d be angry too if you had to stand out in a cornfield all day. Mordred will meet his end when the rain finally wets all his straw. You heard it here first.
You people just don’t recognize great storytelling when you see it! Like a Jack London novel, this story arc pits man against nature! Like a John Ford movie, this story arc makes the terrain itself into a character!
The sad thing is that in the next-to-last panel, the mask shows more expression than Locher puts into his typical face.
Mordred, in the last panel your use of “most” is incorrect. The comparative “more” is used when two objects are involved. What does Thick fear more, the storm or a real, live killer? Not that it matters. Give him a chance and he’ll run from either.
Panel 1: I dont believe that for a minute Mordred.
Panel 2: Nah Lizz, you think? Someone crown her queen of the obvious.
Panel 3: Just in case anyone forgot what Mordred was. Hey, is Tracy dragging Mordred by his chain?
Panel 4: Can he? Really? Are you sure about that?
Panel 5: Werent you just about to shoot him a second ago Dick? Now you want him to stay close? Make up your mind!
Panel 6: Worried? Only about what happened to his hat and jacket.
Panel 7: The storm. You should be sedated. Speaking of, how are you talking so much?
Sam’s put some weight on his face (panel 4) and the way his mouth is pursed up - apart from yesterday’s strip I’ve never seen it drawn quite that way before.
Panel 5: is Tracy getting fresh with Mordred? How close do you need to be?
OzzieJohn - I was thinking Lochner has been using old photos of Richard Nixon to draw Sam Catchem….way too many similarities in how they look for my taste….
To be sure the strip deserves some critism, but to refer to Sam as “Testicle Chin” shows a dirty mind. It IS funny the way the killer’s mask seems to smile or look unhappy. But if you want total realism watch the News!
To call Sam as “Testicle Chin” shows a dirty mind ? I call it reality ! Where do you see anything dirty ? I guess to some people anything that get close to sex is still dirty !
Hey, I figured it out! The whole arc is based on misunderstandings! Serial killer? Hah! Hasn’t anyone noticed how Testicle Chin is always on the phone? Today he’s in for some two-fisted phoning action, with two more phones behind him. He’s a serial caller, I tell ya! And that “Doctor Mordred” baloney? It’s really Dartmoor Red, the famous English stripper! Between her mask and her hoity-toity Cockney accent nobody can understand her. But wait until she goes into her act and peels out of her costume. What will Thick do when he sees her killer figure? Her legs to die for? Her fatal attraction? Not to mention Tess with a rolling pin in her hand and fire in her eyes?
Tracy is outnumbered. Question whether the storm or Mordred kills him first. Ah, Mordred, if you want to kill Tracy you’d better hurry. The Locherstorm looks to be a take-no-prisoners kind of deal. Not that I would expect either Mordred or Tracy to live through this arc, given the outcome of the last story I remember reading that had a character named Mordred in it.
Secondary note: Tracy says to stay close. Uh, huh. Given how Tracy and Mordred got into this mess, I think I’d want to get as far away from Tracy as I could. He’s not exactly safe to be around. It might actually be safer to be close to Mordred than it is to be close to Tracy. That’s saying a good deal considering that Mordred is supposed to be a serial killer.
I’m still laughing at the time Mordred was screaming at Thick, calling him a fool and he can’t even drive right. If I remember correctly, Thick was about to pull his famous Evel Knevel stunt, aka “Dukes of Hazzard Jump”. Right into the lake!
@Bill Thompson
Right! Locher can put Police Headquarters in his caption, why not be as specific with his other caption? He knows exactly where they are:
I think I figured out why we still haven’t seen that “smart detective” that Mordred keeps talking to – and also what’s happening with Tracy’s necktie. It’s Lamont Cranston! The Shadow! He is smart, and he is invisible, and he is choking Tracy with his own necktie! He’s not going to kill him, I’m sure, and probably not even going to choke him to unconsciousness – he’s only going to subdue Tracy enough so he can drag the old fool to safety.
Tcayer, the answer to your question is in the 52 miles between where Dick picks up Mordred and Headquarters, where Dick/Thick is supposed to deliver him. Out here in Chicago’s Suburbia, there’s a good deal of wilderness some of which could fill in for Street Corner Lake.
Case in point: I just came up from Kankakee the other day, and the county jail there is within the range (52 miles) given from Naperville. Anybody who has ever driven from one to the other, not by Interstate bu by two-lane highway, will know that there’s some territory there where you could conceivably get into the kind of jam Tracy finds himself in now. A wild night, the road turns but your car fails to near the river, and not a farmhouse within reasonable (given the conditions) distance and you have Tracy’s predicament.
Not explained: Why would Tracy choose two-lane highway when the Interstates connect Kankakee to Naperville in only an hour and a half or so. Even in wild weather, the Interstates have the dibs just on the safety factor.
I don’t get it . The journey was scheduled to last one hour . How in the hell Police Headquarter knows that Spacy is in trouble ? Communications are down . Dick never ask for any help . And why is Testicle Chin not wearing his all weather suit ?
What happened to the dead body at the Science museum ? Where’s Pig-On-Wheel ? Where’s the FLOOOOM ?
…and back at POLICE HOOTERS, Testicle Chin seems to be showing off his collection of antique cell phones, as (in panels two and four) he’s shown holding three distinctly different phones (at least one of them upside down). Alas, given the grossly deformed appendages with which he’s holding the phones (which can be called “hands” only by virtue of being at the ends of his arms), he’s probably dropping them left and right.
Yes puddleglum1066 - The size of the sunday strip is
smaller.
This must be Locher’s doing. A few weeks back, when I asked the posters what age they were, the result came that most of us are baby boomers. 55 years old and up.
So since our eyesight must not be as good as it used to be, I think Locher asked GoComics to make the strip smaller so we will have a harder time to see it and make our comments.
Clicking on the comic makes it fill the screen so that problem is taken care of. I fear nothing can cure the stupidities which fill the resulting larger comic though.
About our failing eyesight: I plead guilty. I was near 20/20 right up to my 40th birthday, since then it’s declined. I wear 2.75 magnification these days.
As further evidence that Locher & Brozzie are out of touch with reality, just look at the house in Slimegobblers. Where else can you see a house with a roof shaped like a mason jar?
The Sunday strip appears to be the same size as usual. It’s just less worth looking at than usual. The only good thing is that my glasses didn’t fall apart again when I looked at it.
…Where else can you see a house with a roof shaped like a mason jar?
You mean you never saw a Masonard roof before?
Doc can see him ‘sweating through the rain’, but doesn’t notice that the Dickster is sitting on a van de Graaf generator.
Next panel: note the tasteful positioning of Sam’s pinkie.
Next panel: what exactly is Dickster holding in his right hand, as his tie blows in one direction and his hair in the opposite? It could be a chain, but it could also be that the Dick-Doc relationship has reached a whole new level.

Then Spacy will say, what an irony, cuz Mordred was going to be sent to the electric chair anyway! Ho ho ho!
