If you grow your own, you know there are often these little green bugs that look so much like the broc. that they hide in the tiny branches and slip into that boiling water and float to the top when you cook it.
Nice try, Garfield, but “healthy” (meaning “in good health”) and “healthful” (meaning “good for your health,” which is what the broccoli actually meant) are two different words. Just because one broccoli floret coughed doesn’t mean that it’s not still good for you!
Yeah, i know. It also ruins the taste of the broc. Growing it very early in the season before you see the yellow butterflies that lay the eggs for the worms helps, too.
Waiting Man, you are so right!!!!! It is absolutely hysterical watching them stalk, chase, and run from invisible enemies!
But what continually surprises me, is, they’re not as tough as they let on. They’re babies on the inside who need love and affection.
My cat is very independent, a fearless hunter who takes no guff. But once a day, she sits in my arms, hiding her face in the crook of my arm, and kneading her paws like a wee bairn nursing. Then after a bit, off she goes, all “don’t touch me”, ready for mischief and play.
I wonder how Garfield copes with lack of affection?
Or, does he have a secret life?
Looked it up online - seems to have originally come from Turkey, however, the specific variety we normally eat was developed in Italy. The Brits didn’t like the stuff, and it was brought over by Italian families to the US, but did not become widely known till the 1920’s. Evolved from Kale and is a member of the Cabbage family.

So there CAN be protein, too.

Freeholder,,, Soak your cauliflower and broccoli in salt water overnight before cooking it. Rinse and then cook. Gets rid of the bugs.
