The title is, “Mistress and Maid.” given that the painting is from the second half of the 1600s, it’s surprising to me that the maid apparently can read.

The maid who facilitates and guides the love affairs of her mistress is all over the place in art, literature, and male fantasy in this period.

Vermeer is known for his use and manipulation of light, so Mr. Melcher’s caption is quite apropos.
