Kate, you need to ask different kinds of questions. Some that will require more of an answer, like “What did you have for lunch?” Or you could say “Tell me something that happened at school today,” Those things always got more of an answer from my grandkids.

More definite answers via better questions. If the children aren’t engaged in school you need to find out why and what, if anything, can be done.
