The top tax rate was very high then, but basically nobody paid it. They paid accountants and set up tax shelters to get around it. And would do the same today. So Phase 2 would be to set up debtor prisons for tax evaders. That might be a teensy bit socialist…..

The main point of the strip—that ‘socialist’ ideas today are mainly just ideas to get us back to where we were decades ago in terms of fiscal policy, is correct. Reagan really screwed us good.

I’m going to need a lot more duct tape to keep my prejudices and preconceived notions intact.

When Americans see upsetting events, our democracy provides recourse: The wealthy just call their Senator. The middle class send an email to a friend who knows an intern for their Congressman. And the impoverished just swear at their TV.

Most people living in the United States don’t have a clue about what true Socialism is or who’s a Socialist. They throw the term around – usually as a derogative – as a concept or political idea to be feared and shunned.

I’m tired of trying to explain to the closed-minded, “educated” ignoramuses how true democratic socialism works and how it can co-exist within a “capitalist” framework.

If you feel some desperate need to label my independent thinking then I will happily accept designations like progressive, liberal, and socialist, if that’s what floats your boat. I subscribe to no political party, abhor extreme radicalism in any form and consider myself a centrist and a political agnostic.

I enjoyed growing up in the 50s. I got a new pair of blinders every Christmas.

In the ’50s the New Deal was still around and was mainstream.

It all comes down to the food. Would you take 1950s politics again if it meant you had to give up 90% of today’s grocery store choices or restaurant menu picks? Pass the bologna and white bread, please. (What? Strawberry Jello for dessert? Hold the tuna casserole!)

I am proud to live in Milwaukee, where our series of Socialist Party mayors made this one of the nation’s most livable cities for most of the early 20th century (yes, the Happy Days family had a Socialist in city hall, and he was pretty widely admired).

Ah, you are surely a most cunning linguist! I was born in 1940 and I get this one entirely. I was raised as an Ike Republican, but now that’s a medium liberal. I’m hoping to see the Rethugs implode. Like you, I’m politically agnostic, but somehow I haven’t voter for anyone R in about 50 yrears or more.
