Grandma, though it sounds sexist, needs to meet a kindly gentleman who is willing to pool resources and make a better life between the three of them. Being a mechanic is also a plus.
When I was a kid, I often had crackers with butter for breakfast and crackers with cheese for dinner. Sometimes I had ketchup sandwiches, which are exactly what they sound like. Baloney sandwiches were a splurge.
Somehow my Dad had enough money to get drunk every day but not enough for food. My Mother worked 12 hours a day trying to keep a roof over our heads, so meals were Dad’s responsibilities.
I always wonder about Grandma’s life. She would have grown up when women had almost no opportunities, as opposed to the limited opportunities they have now. My Mother was a brilliant woman who was forced to quit high school (her father physically dragged her out) because her father didn’t believe girls needed an education and he wanted her to work. She worked as a waitress and a janitor all her life.

Stop it, Agnes! You might cause Grandma to break into a laugh panic, which could hazardous to her health!
