A girl in the mall was dressed like a ghost and her costume got caught. People started crowding around the mother who was trying to release her. Not one of them would push the stop button. I was battering the ghouls away from the struggling mother and she managed to rip the material. People enjoy tragedy and want to see it first hand.
A few years ago in Sears, Hubby and I got on a down escalator which had a sign at the top “no strollers or carts”. Of course, I thought this didn’t apply to moi and rested my shopper on the step. It got caught in the crack at the bottom and we couldn’t get it loose so Hubby pressed the big red button which brought the whole thing to a grinding halt. We extricated the shopper and slunk out of the store, hoping no one had noticed!
I just couldn’t laugh at this one – I get that sympathetic cringe feeling instead. While I lived near Boston a woman got her scarf caught coming out of the subway and was strangled to death before anyone could/did stop the escalator.
Elevators can malfunction too. There was an incident in Houston several years ago when someone tried to squeeze into and elevator as the doors were closing and was decapitated! I’ve been much more cautious with elevators, ever since.

That’s OK, he’ll come around again and you can pick up the pieces on the stairs.
