My mother told me the tale of a daughter of a friend of hers who wouldn’t brush her teeth and they consequently all turned green. After that, I brushed regularly.
I agree with Opal! Threats to take away a beloved toy and bribes to take them to the movies…..that was yesteryear….now, it threats to take away their cell phones and iPads, and bribes to play X Box for two hours instead of one. OY! Raising kids is an uphill battle because parents are always competing with “ what all the other kids have”!! Spoiled rotten! But as long as you teach them the values of life they will be ok.
Threats and bribes are emotionally easy. Unfortunately they teach some wrong lessons. For example, kids learn that those are the only reason to do things. Or those are the only ways to get things done. No one learns that somethings need to be done for their intrinsic value.

what bribes would you give a husband — specially an elderly husband — to brush his teeth?

My rule was ‘never threaten’. And I wouldn’t bribe either. Lay down simple, rational rules and enforce them fairly for everyone (parents included).

For husbands, bribes work well, but threats not so much. Not talking about teeth here.

Empty threats mean nothing. My parents meant what they said. Bribes were not needed.

I’ve always governed by The Look & The Point. I’m not one to scream and yell – especially when silence can be more effective.
I once asked my oldest grandson if I’d ever spanked or hit him. " No," he replied. " But I knew you would ".

Don’t forget nagging.
