From Frazz’s side, consider the Officials at his events. They get to stand outside all day in hot sun or cold rain. They pay their own expenses and get to take home a new hat and shirt … to go with the other 50 hats & shirts. Dad might have made out much better.
We are told — indeed, millions have been told as yet another commencement-speech season wraps up — that life is about the journey, not the destination. But there is a third option, apparently, geared straight at my demographic. My peers and I have kind of made it look like life is about the t-shirt and finisher’s medal.
I’m fine with that, if a little sheepish. The t-shirts and hardware in question are not supposed to be acquired, and certainly not sported, without having taken some kind of journey to get them. Which makes the shirts neither the journey nor the destination, really, yet they represent both. We’ll call them documentation. Really, really, ridiculously expensive documentation in several different ways. But as expensive as they are, they come with the potential for this conversation:

Frazz sez: “Either your dad is a genius or you’re making fun of me.”

“Nice shirt! Where did you get it?”
“Dude, you can’t buy this one.”
And it’s worth it.
