You do need at least 18 inches of loose, clot free soil beneath the carrots. The seeds themselves are spread on top of the soil and covered with a light covering of dirt. one trick is to mix radish seeds with the carrot seeds. Radishes mature faster than carrots. Removing the ripe radishes, effectively thins out the carrot bed. By the way, if you have heavy clay soil, expect short, thick carrots.
My wife grew carrots — first year they grew an inch and made a u-turn. Second year she had me dig the bed deeper — they grew an inch and made a u-turn. Third year I was down about three feet — they grew an inch and made a u-turn. About then I started insisting on store-bought carrots…

Gee. I planted our carrots last week. I guess I didn’t buy the right seeds. I bought baby carrots, not the super lllooooooong kind.
