I watched the Red Bull soap box cart from Brazilon tv last night. I know how to spend a bank holiday, and there was a team dressed as Calvin and Hobbes. Their car was the little red cart and they did very well.

At 6, my kids could name and identify the simple machines, but only knew “they made you stronger” or “traded distance for strength”

Well that’s pretty much exactly how the government grant process works, so he has that nailed. (Why that’s how the government grant process works, or why there is a government grant process, is a separate issue).

Mom will make it a conditional grant. B+’s on your report card, sitting still for a photo taken by your Dad and eating all your meals without critiquing them. And then the no will come because she knows you.

According to Science Trek, the six basic simple machines are the lever, wheel and axle, inclined plane, wedge, pulley and screw.

A bed making robot would be more like a pulley system built into the headboard or something, but when you’re 6 every robot needs to have a head and body like from the movies.

Isn’t Calvin’s dad a patent lawyer? I guess that’s where Calvin got his knowledge of machines.

Just ask around a college campus. First comes some half-baked idea, then comes the long beer-fueled brainstorming session (often conflated w/ step 1)… but nothing further will happen unless there’s a grant involved.
