‘,,,Generals order their soldiers to kill—and to fight for a cause they’ve long ago forgotten…’ I’ve always thought the leaders who want the war should be the ones to fight it out in a boxing-type ring.

Is Rodney carrying a lance or an arrow? If it’s a lance, that’s too short. If it’s an arrow, where’s his bow? Not that it matters anyway.

So many people haven’t a clue as to human nature that has been ingrained for thousands of years. Nabuquduriuzhur gave a couple of good reasons in his post above. Those who believe it is alway started by the “arms manufacturers”, the “US Government” or similar thinking that it is down just for the sake of war or to make a profit don’t seem to realize that wars have occurred over the centuries mostly for the reasons Nabuquduriuzhur has stated (aside from the very specific instances he cited) or even misunderstandings on some occasions. They weren’t started ago because some “arms maker” wanted a big profit or years ago because some leader woke up and thought “Gee, I want to start a war today just for the fun of it”. You either defended yourself of you capitulated to either becoming a “slave” of the conqueror and/or forfeited your life and your loved ones. In modern wars, do arms makers make a big profit – sure they do, but it doesn’t mean that they started a major war. Anyway, this subject is too complex to discuss in a comments section, especially for some who are too feeble minded to understand human nature in its fullest.

Bless the fallen, the wounded, and the survivors of conflict brought about for whatever reason, whether conquest, retribution, or to make things right. They have suffered for the rest of us, with little return from our government for their sacrifices.

If. _before_a conflict began, political and military leaders took tours of the ’enemy’s’ cemeteries along with the parents and survivors, then followed-up with a similar tour of their own burial grounds, would that bring about a different approach to settling conflict? Or would the tours just offer another opportunity for political bombast and rhetoric, like the crocodile tears they shed on the tours conducted in the years after the conflicts.?

Contrary to contemporary practice, regret is never an acceptable substitute for taking action to avoid war.

The wars will stop only when they both also mourn the deaths of their opponents.

I am a vet and as so, I need to remember those who also fought. I was one of many young men who were given a rifle and bullets and told to go do damage. The other team had the same such boys with the same directives. I really feel bad for the families of those who were shipped home early.

Thank you for reminding us all what this holy day is about. It’s not about grilling, the start of summer, or vacation plans. Before any of that, take a moment to recall how many people paid for the freedoms we enjoy today. Then remember their opponents, who also believed in their cause. They lie together in many places the world over.

In Flanders fields the poppies blow Between the crosses, row on row, That mark our places; and in the sky The larks, still bravely singing, fly Scarce heard amid the guns below. We are the Dead. Short days ago We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow, Loved and were loved, and now we live, In Flanders fields.Take up our quarrel with the foe; To you from failing hands we throw The torch; be yours to hold it high. If ye break faith with us who die We shall not sleep, though poppies grow in Flanders field.

While I may sound cynical, just think of what the Earth’s population would be if all the people who died in wars had survived and reproduced! Second thought – A lot of wars are fought for religious reasons (my God is the true one and I kill you if you don’t agree (Crusades for instance)).

Anyone who goes to almost any military cemetery and doesn’t tear up and wonder why (no matter which side), was not raised right. I’ll probably make an exception for a cemetery with Waffen SS and the like but still wonder how they could have gone so wrong.

In Karate we learned, “karate nie senta nashi” (sp) which translates: “in karate, there is no first attack”. Which means we don’t attack, we just defend. If everybody did that, we would have no wars or fighting.

We.. should be grateful that our species has a hankering for war. It has led to the dispersal of our kind world wide. And coming up with better ways to kill your perceived enemies has given us those creature comforts that we take for granted.

It would be nice if we could live without soldiers or war. Unfortunately, someone always wants what you have and is willing to fight to take it, or wants to harm your allies the same way. WWII was a good example of a war that couldn’t be avoided. I honor all those who have given everything so that we can live in relative peace and security.
