Look at the boys lined up at the desk, all precious and united for once. Lupin’s anxious little eyebrows, and Elvis with his paws folded so neatly, keeping his composure like it’s something to physically hold onto. Oh, they’re darling.
In unrelated news, it’s now a life goal of mine to begin a sentence with “A llama told me…”
Quick update on Nushi: Nushi is not going to be one of those who is back to normal in a couple of days, but I’ve been told to stay the course and not up her dosage yet. The doctor who knows says it can take time with this form of FIP, so I am doing my best to trust his judgement on this. Nushi is still wobbly and lethargic, appetite is better, but she’s still losing weight. AND STILL she will start purring the moment you touch her or say hi.
Quick update on the Orb: The Orb is an amazing, shining light and I am so lucky to be a part of it. Thanks to all of you who donated to Nushi’s and my gofundme page. I was, am and will be amazed and extremely grateful for your support in all the many ways you’ve shown it. Messages left on the site tell me many have lost furbabies to this disease, and are rightly still infuriated at the devastation it causes. I hope Nushi gets better to give you all firsthand proof it can be beat. For her sake, my sake, for your sake, for Georgia’s and Beatrix’s sake. Enough!!!!
You’ve proven that the Orb is as mighty and beautiful as we all knew it was. Thank you! Shirin
O.T. – Passing along a heartfelt “hi” to all from SheMc, she hopes to be back on the comment board once life settles a bit more into place for her & family. Thanks to all for being so great at lifting each another up when we need it most!
Baba Mouse, dressed as she is, carrying a lantern and using a walking-stick. Just a casual observation tells us that this cat has stories to tell. And I look forward to reading them all!
OT: If you want to immerse yourself in absolute cuteness, go to Explore.org live cams and watch the bobkits on the Bobcat Rehab Intensive Care cams at Big Cat Rescue. Two bobcat kittens with similar histories – both found by well-meaning citizens along roadways who thought they were rescuing domestic kittens but the Humane Society said, uh, nope, nope, and nope again. They are being raised together and being taught not to trust or depend on humans so that they can someday be released back into the wild instead of having to spend the rest of their lives in captivity. If Beatrix’s little tail melts your heart, you should watch Cinder and Ash having their morning zoomies with those lil half tails twitching. (If the cam happens to go on highlights while you are viewing it, you will see clips of a mama bobcat carrying one of her kits around at night – that is Sky who has already been released into the wild, along with her three kittens. They had the misfortune of being born in a live trap when their mother was caught by a farmer and they all stayed at the sanctuary until the babies could eat whole prey.)

Orbsters, I’d like to share a bit of my childhood with you. My hometown in Rhode Island had a summer recreation program for the children of the town, as did most of the towns in Rhode Island. The town’s recreation director was a man named Al Southwick, and in the late 70s, he put forth the radical notion that the kids in town who had any kind of physical/emotional/developmental disability deserved to enjoy the benefits of the summer recreation program as much as anyone else. (And it really was radical; it wasn’t until 1978 that anyone was seriously willing to play with the notion that I deserved to be in a regular classroom, let alone on a regular playground.)
Not only were we entitled to the same benefits of the recreation program, we were entitled to be treated the same as every other kid in the program, to the same attention and love and caring whether we were running around with only one leg, had Down’s Syndrome, had ADHD, or needed an entire minute to slur out a single sentence due to cerebral palsy. We were entitled to go to the annual trip to the Red Sox game or to the roller-skating rink or to open-swim hours at the indoor pool at URI. We were entitled to he carted to those events on the recreation department’s big blue bus, sitting with everyone else, singing along with mix tapes that included everything from Buddy Holly to Twisted Sister. We were entitled to have Al know every single one of us on sight, ask how we were doing, and be genuinely interested in our answer. And he did it for so long that he worked with the grandchildren of some of the kids he worked with early on.
Al passed away on Wednesday morning. There’s a link below to his obituary, but it has a minor typo. The last sentence of the second paragraph should read “… nieces, nephews, cousins, and every single kid who ever called North Kingstown home at any time over the past 44 years.”
Yesterday asrialfeeple posted a link to a YouTube video that is blocked in North America. I was curious what the video was, so I hunted around and found out what it was and where else to find it. I’ll just say this: Charlie Brown. Memorial Day. Emmy and Peabody awards. Heart is swelling, and I haven’t even watched the whole thing yet.
dailymotion.com/video/x4imafp
Also: “The special is available for purchase on iTunes together with You’re Not Elected, Charlie Brown and He’s a Bully, Charlie Brown, and is now available on DVD in the Peanuts Emmy Honored Collection.” (from Wikipedia)
And oh the beautiful watercolor backgrounds. Definitely an artistic ancestor to BCN.
