When those first came out, there was a story in the local paper about cops catching a running thief on a dark night by following his shoes. I was talking with the mom of one of my Cochlear Implant patients (a girl about 7 or 8). Mom asked the kid if that would happen to her, expecting kiddo to say no because she wouldn’t steal. Kid thought for a few minutes and said no because I’d take off my shoes.

That will do it, at least until one of the bulbs burns out and the whole string goes dark.
