I love the long days of summer, and hate to see the summer solstice come because I know I’m losing precious light every day. On the other hand, the winter solstice is a day of great rejoicing!
EDT, DST are just fribbles, specious attempts by mankind to give themselves the illusion of control. As it has ever been, the sun and moon and stars ignore them and hold to their traditional courses. Something to depend on in a chaotic world.
finally – I AGREE – to the 16 hours sleep (or more) on December 21-22. which by the way is Saturday – Sunday in case you were wondering. but there is the fact I may not make it to then – soooo – maybe I should do it tonight!
Heck when I was a pre-teen/teen, twelve hours of sleep was my minimum. Of course there were the occasional not sleeping for two and half days, for Barr House parties or end of term.
It turns out you can bank sleep, a little, and you can withdraw a little bit from what you banked. But only over a fairly short term (a few days), not 6 months.

How far north do you have to be to have only four hours of night on the June solstice?
