On my planet, a suspect who initially denies guilt and is later found or pleads guilty, must reimburse any and all agencies which spent time and money proving the case. If he pleads up front, no charge. In other words, don’t waste our time if you’re guilty…

The 24/7 news cycle has killed investigative reporting. Independent sources on social media are trying to bring it back. The spawn of the 24/7 news cycle are doing everything in their power to demonize and demonitize their unwanted independent competition.

This is our surreality in 2019.

Sadly accurate. That rumbling sound you hear emanating from various points around the country is the sound of Edward R. Murrow, Walter Cronkite, Chet Huntley and David Brinkley rapidly rotating in their Sepulchers…

The only problem with this is the strip says journalists actually investigate and reinvestigate. Much of the press is like Twitter on steroids.

The real end to the reporter sequence is that the politician would say, what? that’s old (fake) news and do something else that occupies the reporters time for a while.

Yellow journalism has existed since the first page of news came out. Before that there was gossip, We still gossip but now we do it at the speed of light. It is up to us to avoid falling for gossip.

No, Pastis. You’re wrong. Journalists are a bunch of biased propaganda pushers. Armed with facts my foot. They’re always armed with half truths and blatantly biased propaganda with selectively selected news stories. Most of em are like that, if not all, that is.

In my opinion, Stephan hit the nail on the head. Years ago I took a journalism class and learned the rules for good reporting. (That’s when History, Social Studies and Geometry were taught! AND prior to FB.) Newspaper reporters (journalists) researched facts before they approached the editor with a story. Today it seems to be who gets the story first, gets the publicity, whether the story is true or not. Now, even with proof of falsehoods, they are reluctant to print an apology or correction. Social media acts as judge, jury and executioner (killing reputations) without regard to facts or truth.

And editors, we really really need editors. Way back in the antediluvian ages when there was email but no internet there were discussion groups. Two kinds: One was “moderated” by a few folks who volunteered their time to make sure that every message met the standards of the group. That kind was extremely useful to me in my work. The un moderated ones were a lot of fun if you wanted to watch flame wars, but the information density approached zero.

There were Democrat analysts and academics who questioned the effectiveness of Cambridge Analytica. There’s an irony in it becoming such a popular belief via social media. Analysts from both sides said the OCEAN analytics weren’t nearly as useful as good old “how did they vote previously” tried and tested methods. It could be said, perhaps in a social media meme, that a bunch of Internet scammers took nearly 6 big ones from Trump’s campaign funds for a couple of tins of tartan paint.

FTR, I’m on the left and don’t have a Facebook account.
